If there is one thing that I cannot stand, it is a person that is close-minded.  You cannot go on living life in a little bubble thinking that every thought that conjures in your brain is the correct one.  50 shades of grey is not just some kinky book series, it’s also the variations that occur in a political argument.  Let’s take for instance:  gay marriage.

I’d like to first ask the question, why is our government so involved when there is supposed to be a separation of church and state?  The government should not be overlooking my religious views when the 1st amendment already gave me that freedom to believe what I want to believe.

Then there are the people that firmly believe that God made marriage for a man and a woman.  Okay, sure, let’s believe that.  Then let’s also look at the divorce rates.  I’m sure that there are plenty of gay couples that have lasted a lot longer than some straight couples.  Let them be.

I know that the Catholic faith is against gay marriage because they believe that it is between a man and a woman.  And that’s fine, whatever, but don’t condemn those that want to go against the grain.  As a Catholic, it’s hard for me to stand back and think that this very view is quite contradicting of the love that we speak of.  We are to love one another as Jesus loved us.  We have to accept our neighbors for who they are.  This is fostered by allowing our minds to stay open.

Love is love is love is love.  Seriously, to me, that whole sentence sums it up.  Just because I’ve never felt that way towards another female, does not make those feelings wrong.  We have to look within ourselves.  Why are we so afraid and so against these things?  Is it because people tell us that we should be or need to be?

It tears me apart when people make fun of gay people like it’s some disease or something that you can catch.  Take a step back and think about yourself.  Put yourself in their shoes, walk a mile or two.  Do you think that acknowledging those feelings is a piece of cake too?  There are certain stages in identity that are dedicated to homosexuals.  It’s not like someone just decides some day that’s what they want to be and they run with it.

I beg you, keep an open mind, allow the very thoughts of Christianity that tell us that we should accept others and treat others the way we want to be treated to accept those who have different feelings and attractions than maybe you have.  It’s not the end of the world.  Nothing bad is going to come of letting gay marriage occur.  Gays get married…so what?  They have rights too, just as much as you and I.  They want to be able to make their love officially committed by the act of marriage, so let them.

Who am I to judge?   Who am I to say that something someone believes is wrong?  I’m just over here thinking, “Yay, equality!”  But seriously, take a step back and ask yourself how you can persecute someone for believing something that may not match up with your beliefs.  We would all be better off if we took the time to reevaluate ourselves than jumping to harsh conclusions.
